I don't live in Niagara Falls, but I live within the region that it is within. We had an extremely powerful Thunderstorm move through not too long ago. It became dark enough that it triggered the light sensors on the street lights and activated them.

i think it dies down over lake erie 'cause it wasn't that dark for us

It is possible, especially seeing that the water in the Great Lakes may still be cooler than the ground. The storms may not be able to gain moisture from the surface of the lake, and thus causing to lose energy.
